Intentional naming in personal networks |
Description:
Personal networks organize all computers, devices, and network services used by an individual in a single logical network. Intentional naming is a way to provide resource discovery and service location in such a network. Using intentional naming, applications can use a simple language to describe what they are looking for instead of e.g. IP addresses. By using late binding, integrating name resolution and message routing, communication can continue, even if name-to-address mappings change during a session. The challenge for this project is to investigate how intentional naming with late binding can be used in personal networks in the presence of a high degree of mobility (i.e. movement of users or devices).
The project will start with studying the principles of intentional naming and late binding. Problems w.r.t. dealing with mobility have to be identified. A solution for these problems has to be developed. An important aspect of the project is to develop an example personal network application on top of the INS/Twine system, which is a completely distributed peer-to-peer architecture for resource discovery based on intentional naming. This prototype application could be a distributed conferencing application.
In particular the goals of this assignment are:
• Study the concept of personal networks and the design and implementation of INS/Twine.
• Investigate problems and solutions in supporting mobility w.r.t. the late binding concept of INS/Twine.
• Study the design and implementation steps of the prototype application.
• Implement the prototype application based on the INS/Twine framework.
• Specify and accomplish functional and/or performance experiments on the implementation
including mobility situations. |
